3/26/2007
The 12th Annual Palm Beach
International Film Festival (PBIFF) will pay a special tribute to South
Africa on Monday, April 23 with a full day of festivities, including
screenings of South African films and a special tribute to one its leading
filmmakers, Anant Singh. All four of the films to be featured are Singh
films including the first South African film ever to be nominated for an
Academy Award(R) as well as the highest grossing South African film of all
time. The day will be capped by a South African-themed party at LaCigale in
Delray Beach.
The tribute is part of a newly inaugurated "World Showcase of Films,"
which will feature premieres of independent films from two new countries
each year with this year's focus on South Africa and Israel during the
eight-day Festival from April 19-26.
The daylong South African event is sponsored by South Africa's
65,000-acre private game reserve, Kwandwe (http://www.kwandwe.com). The event also
features special discussions with South African filmmaker Anant Singh and a
presentation by Kwandwe prior to the party at LaCigale. Both Kwandwe and
LaCigale are among the international holdings of South Florida entrepreneur
and philanthropist Carl DeSantis.
"We're proud to support the world-renowned Palm Beach International
Film Festival and honor the work of South African filmmakers," said
DeSantis.
According to Angus Sholto-Douglas, Manager of the Kwandwe Private Game
Reserve, a major sponsor of this year's festival, "South Africa provides a
perfect setting for filmmakers to make their wildest ideas come to life."
"In choosing a country's films to recognize, South Africa was one of
the first that came to mind," said Randi Emerman, Executive Director of the
Palm Beach International Film Festival. "We are so grateful for the support
of South Africa's magnificent Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, which should be
commended for the numerous contributions that it and its Foundation have
made to the people and their communities along the Eastern Cape."
The South African Showcase will be screening films at Sunrise Cinemas
in Mizner Park from 1:00 pm through 10:00 pm. More information available at
