FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
BELTSVILLE, MD., May 8, 2000.--Move over, Venus Fly Trap.
Make way for a Martian-inspired fly killer developed by a scientist,
whose experiment was carried on a NASA mission to look for life
on Mars.
Dr. Gilbert V. Levin has successfully tested "FlyCracker™"and
his company, Biospherics (NASDAQ: BINC) is marketing the new pesticide
that kills fly larvae, but is completely safe to planet earth
and to the humans who inhabit it.
Levin, a Ph.D., who is president and CEO of the
Maryland-based biotech company, stumbled on the killer idea while
testing other substances in connection with his NASA experiments
conducted on Mars.
"We wanted to address what is a major health problem
for farmers and ranchers caused by flies, but without resorting
to dangerous chemicals, which in turn can create super bugs resistant
to those chemicals."
"We were finding dead flies around some material
we had created and from this we developed a truly remarkable product
that is safe to humans, biodegradable and very bad news for flies,"
he said.
Fly infestations are a serious problem for dairy,
livestock, chicken farmers and others operating in large enclosed
areas, who have found out the hard way that many pesticides are
expensive, hazardous, and a regulatory headache.
FlyCracker made its debut last month at the Clark
County Fair and Rodeo in Logandale, Nevada, where the first 50-pound
bag orders were taken, and at the National Finals Rodeo sponsored
by The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
FlyCracker is a dry, granular substance that is
sprinkled over areas prone to infestation. Unlike other pesticides,
FlyCracker does not need to be registered with the Federal Environmental
Protection Agency and is "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS)
by the Food and Drug Administration. Unlike harsh pesticides,
the new product relies on a physical, rather than a chemical,
process that does not allow the fly larvae to develop into adult
flies. Hence, no resistance can be developed to the new pesticide.
Biospherics is marketing FlyCracker both on the
Internet www.FlyCracker.com
and via a toll-free telephone number: 1-877-FLY-B Gon."{main}
