TransMedia Group To BP Amoco: 'Stop Sending Subpoenas To Our Publicists!'
BOCA RATON, Fla., September 30/PRNewswire/ -- TransMedia Group, a public
relations firm representing nine independent Amoco station operators battling
to hold on to their stations, said today it has received a second subpoena
from lawyers for BP Amoco.
"Why are they bothering us with these subpoenas?" the firm's chairman
Thomas J. Madden asks. "Our publicists have nothing material to add to their
litigation with these nine service station operators. Since we're just the
messengers here, I can only interpret this as an attempt to disrupt us or
scare us."
So far, lawyers for BP Amoco have requested to see every scrap of
communications between TransMedia and its client, the group of nine, including
contracts and even copies of checks by which the operators have paid monthly
fees and expenses for PR services.
When TransMedia received its first subpoena the week before last, Madden
contacted his professional association, the Public Relations Society of
America, inquiring if this could be a scare tactic to get his PR firm to back
off from representing the nine dissident independent Amoco station operators.
Madden said the first subpoena arrived in the midst of a media campaign
it's waging on behalf of the group of nine, including two orderly protest
demonstrations. Each of the operators have filed lawsuits against BP Amoco,
charging the oil company deceived them into investing in the stations from
which the company now seeks to evict them.
Last week, TransMedia's Director of Broadcast Media Michelle Rosen
received the second subpoena issued to a TransMedia employee. She is
scheduled to appear at a deposition early next month.
"We're only doing our job serving a client and we won't be intimidated by
anyone," Madden said.
In the first two-hour deposition, Madden said an attorney for BP Amoco
demanded to know who came up with the term "David and Goliath," which is how
TransMedia had characterized the battle between its client and the giant oil
company in a press release. Madden said TransMedia did not originate the term.
"It's in The Bible."
