Some of the Holiest Burial Sites in Jerusalem Are Up for Sale; Old Myth Says, Buy Them Now and Live a Longer Life

PR Newswire -- October 14, 2002

JERUSALEM, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ --According to "Hevrat Kadisha Meha Shearim," an Israeli organization that sells burial plots in Jerusalem, it's tradition that if you choose a gravesite before you actually need one, you'll live a long life. And that's especially true if you plot yourself in Jerusalem.

The organization is currently searching for a select group of American Jews who want to ensure a long life by securing their spot now -- in some of the world's most coveted burial places in the Holy City.

Hevrat Kadisha representative Jonathan Schreiber says, "Some of Israel's most prominent spiritual and religious leaders are buried here. These are four of the most prestigious graveyards in Jerusalem. They include: Mount Zion, Edat Yera'im, Shomrei Ha'Chomot, and Yeshne Jerusalem."

Mariel Simone, the American liaison for the organization, says, "Because more and more people are buying plots at these sites, which are some of the oldest in Jerusalem, where according to the Old Testament, the Second Coming of the Messiah will occur, there is very little availability."

"Each of the four sites has special significance, and so the prices vary at all of them," says Simone. A single grave on Mount Zion is $6,500. That's the bottom of the range. At the top is Shomrei Ha'Chomot, where a single grave is $21,900.
