Groundbreaking Highlighted by 'Digging for Dough'

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla, April 23/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is pleased to announce the groundbreaking for a new store located at 2031 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd. on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at 10 a.m. Congressman Mark Foley, State Reps. James Harper, Jr. and Susan Bucher, West Palm Beach Commissioners William Moss and Isaac Robinson, Jr., and aides from the offices of Gov. Jeb Bush, U.S. Representatives E. Clay Shaw and Alcee L. Hastings will join Krispy Kreme of South Florida LLC Operations Director James A. Cosentino, area dignitaries, local community groups and Krispy Kreme representatives at the ceremony to celebrate Krispy Kreme's arrival in West Palm Beach. The store is expected to open its doors mid- summer.

The ceremony will be highlighted by "Digging for Dough," featuring youths from 20 local community organizations digging for $10,000 in Krispy Kreme FUNDRAISING dollars.

"We are excited to bring the Krispy Kreme experience to Palm Beach County in addition to helping area community groups raise money through our fundraising program," said James A. Cosentino, Operations Director, Krispy Kreme of South Florida LLC.

Like many Krispy Kreme stores across the nation, the West Palm Beach store will feature the traditional "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign. When illuminated, the hot light announces to customers that the store is making batches of hot, fresh Original Glazed doughnuts. Other features include a convenient drive- thru service, additional customer seating and an expanded glass viewing area so that customers can see the doughnuts actually being made. The new West Palm Beach location will employ a team of more than 130 employees.

The West Palm Beach store will also carry the Company's new extended beverage program, including drip coffees ranging from light and smooth to deeper, more intense blends, as well as a rich decaffeinated blend. It also includes espresso-based beverages such as lattes, frozen coffee beverages and other frozen beverages prepared with a variety of proprietary flavors, including Original Kreme. This flavor defines the Company's signature Hot Original Glazed.

Krispy Kreme offers 15 varieties of doughnuts, including the signature Original Glazed. To assure quality and consistency, Krispy Kreme produces its own doughnut mix and its own doughnut making equipment at the Krispy Kreme headquarters in Winston-Salem, NC.
