BACKGROUND
More than one million Americans have Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes - a disease that strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life,
and carries the constant threat of serious complications. Each year in the U.S. alone, more than 13,000 new cases of Type 1 diabetes are diagnosed in
children younger than age 20 ... that's 35 children each and every day. Type 1 diabetes strikes adults as well. But, through the research funding efforts of JDRF, a cure for this unforgiving disease is attainable.
Since its inception more than 30 years ago, JDRF has given $500 million to diabetes research worldwide. At least 87% of every dollar raised goes
directly to the Foundation's mission -- a cure for diabetes.
