United He Stands Against Flight Of American Films To Canada Which Is Putting His Own Film In Jeopardy

PR Newswire -- April 8, 2002

Exporting Jobs To Save a Buck, But Buck Stops With Former Mobster Turned Filmmaker

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Ex-con filmmaker Walter T. Shaw vows over his dead body will his 13-year project, the movie "All For Nothin" starring Ben Kingsley and Stephen Dorff, be shot in Canada. Shaw said the film honoring his father, telecommunications pioneer Walter L. Shaw, must be made in America, the country to which his dad remained steadfastly loyal, even though he died broke.

"I see no palm trees in Canada like in Florida where my dad made a living inventing things we take for granted today including conference calling, call forwarding and speaker phones 30 years before anyone else," said Shaw, once a notorious jewel thief who spent 12 years in prison and a life estranged from his dad until near the end. As a young man seeing his father go uncredited for his brilliant inventions at Bell Labs during the 1930s and 1940s, he set out to right the score through a career in crime, for which he has atoned.

"For his sake and the integrity of this film about our lives that took different paths, I intend to make a stand with other filmmakers against this flight to Canada of the one truly American industry born in the USA.

"I was a bad guy once, but now I feel I'm on the side of right and justice -- that of keeping American films in America, it's one of the last great American products. We need to stand united to preserve thousands of irreplaceable jobs."

Shooting of the independent crime drama was scheduled to start this month in Florida until a distributor who had put up $9.5 million financing, lured by cheaper costs in Canada, pressured to move production there. In refusing, Shaw risks losing his financing for the film he has spent the last 13 years developing, plus his life savings and that of friends supporting the production.

Written by Jeff Young, Charles Canzoneri and Gregory Marquette, "Nothin" is being produced by Shaw through his W. Panther Productions. The director is Predrag "Gaga" Antonijevic ("Hard Cash," "Savior" and "Stranger Than the Wheel"). Kingsley has received a slew of critics' nods this year, for his roles in "Sexy Beast" and in the ABC telefilm "Anne Frank," plus an Oscar nomination for "Sexy Beast," his third.
